The 54th ETA Annual Meeting of the European Tugowners Association – ETA 2017 shall this year be held in Trieste, Italy. This year the event is going to be hosted under the auspices of ETA full member Tripmare. The Annual Meeting is a combination of an interesting and thought provoking conference; a busy agenda for discussion at the Association and parallel meetings and last but not least local traditionally oriented entertainment; all of which providing an excellent opportunity to bring members and guests to meet and network over a unique three days from the 7th to the 9th June.
The 2017 ETA conference ‘Safety is our business’ will be looking into the importance of the towage industry as the provider of sea safety and the trends and challenges the sector is facing to reduce the safety risks in its activities.
Lodging shall be at the Hotel Savoia Excelsior Palace situated in the heart of the city.
The Savoia Excelsior Palace was built in 1911. At the time of its opening in 1912 the hotel was one of the most imposing and luxurious hotels in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Emperor Franz Josef was a frequent guest and his private apartment is preserved intact. Following a full restoration, every fitting and furnishing shimmers with the hotel´s historic grandeur – from the Belle Époque style skylight above the lounge to the rich fabrics.
The 2 days will be filled with activities and excursions both for delegates and guests (find the programme here). While the ETA Executive Committee meets during the afternoon of the 7th (meeting sponsored by Shipowners Club), the AGM participants will be able to visit the impressive Castello Miramare, one of the landmarks of Trieste. This castle was commissioned in the second half of the 19th century by the Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Hapsburg as a residence for himself and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium. The castle offers today’s visitors an example of a luxurious aristocratic residence which has preserved its original furnishings. This excursion is sponsored by VOITH.
The welcome dinner, sponsored by our host company Tripmare will be held at the the Magazzino 26.
The “Magazzino 26” is the largest of all the warehouses constructed in the old port. The building has been recently renovated and retains the charm of a postindustrial location.Our guests will enjoy the best Italian cuisine in a restored jewel of XIX industrial architecture.
The Annual Conference (whose venue and lunch are sponsored by Sanmar) will be held on the 8th at the Hotel Savoia meeting room.The conference will look into the different aspects of maritime safety, giving a prominent attention to environmental protection and humanitarian operations. Different high level key notes will set the scene and give participants a view on the latest EU initiatives to improve maritime safety. Among the speakers, we will count on the participation of Markku Mylly – EMSA Director General and Remi Mayet – DG Move Ports and Inland Navigation who will give a picture of the current regulatory framework and EU actions to minimize risks. The humanitarian side of maritime safety will be analysed by Captain Vittorio Pagotto – Italian Coast Guard Chief Operations Officer who is in charge of the Italian efforts to rescue migrants in the Central Mediterranean. During the conference, ETA delegates´ guests will enjoy a guided tour in Trieste, in which they will discover the multiple faces of the city and its history. Guests will not only visit the main landmarks but they will actively experience Trieste´ s unique gastronomy by taking part in a didactic cooking show and a tasting of the renowned local coffee. This imposing castle is overlooking the sea just outside of Trieste. The building commenced in 1389 at the order of the Wallsee family. In the nineteenth century, it became one of the residences for Prince Alexander von Thurn und Taxis and his wife Princess Marie. The Castle is owned by their grandson, Prince Carlo Alessandro della Torre e Tasso. Castello Duino has been opened to the public as a museum and a park in 2003.
The social day (sponsored by Banchero Costa and Anglo Belgian Corporation) will offer the Annual Meeting participants a unique and memorable experience with the visit to the Lipica stud farm. The historical estate founded in 1580 hosts hundreds of Lipizzaner horses, globally known for combining their big size with grace, quiet temperament and intelligence. During the visit to the farm we will have the opportunity to enjoy a performance of classical riding school.
The visit to the stud farm will be followed by a lunch at the historical Antica Trattoria Suban, one of the oldest restaurants in Trieste. Founded in 1895, the establishment serves excellent dishes prepared in traditional Trieste style. After lunch is reserved for a tasting of the best grappas produced in the region.
